No journey on earth is more intriguing, more challenging, or more enduring, than the journey into the depths of one’s own soul. It is a holy pilgrimage to a sacred place unlike any other. Our true companion on the journey is the Spirit of God, taking us by the hand and leading us now into sunlit meadows, now into darkened caves, along pathways at once familiar and yet unexplored.
It is easy to lose our footing, or miss landmarks that point the way. However, the Spirit of the Holy One never loses sight of us. Even when we wrestle with the Spirit, pulling our hand away and striding off willfully on our own, heading toward an unseen precipice, the Spirit holds us always.
Those who accompany others on their spiritual journeys are like wilderness guides for the soul. Whether called by the name of “spiritual director,” “spiritual guide,” “soul friend” (anam cara), or “companion on the journey,” it is a role that is grounded in shared presence and listening for the voice of the Holy One, the true guide along the path.
Participation in WINGS provides one with an education and preparation for soul-companioning.
